PBS.org offers a variety of tips and strategies for parents on how to talk with their children. These tips can be especially helpful after a tragedy such as the elementary school shooting in Connecticut.
Follow Breaking News at WIBA.com
Start by finding out what you child knows. When a news topic comes up, ask an open-ended question like, "What have you heard about it?" This might encourage your child to let you know what they are thinking
Ask a follow-up question. Depending on your child's comments, ask another question to get them thinking. For example, "Why do you think that happened?" or "What do you think people should do to help?"
Listen and acknowledge. If a child talks about a local news event and is worried, recognize their feelings and comfot them. For example, "I know you're worried, but you are safe here. Remember how we always lock our doors?"
