Over the past six years, state officials taken on the task of changing the wording in the state's laws to be more gender-neutral. In the multiyear project, lawmakers have replaced thousands of references to male-centric words in state laws with gender-neutral terms.

For example:

  • "Fireman" must now be "firefighter"
  • "Security guard" replaces "watchmen"
  • "Penmanship" is repalced with "handwriting"
  • "Freshman" must now read "First-year student"
Are there any other terms that should be changed in Washington? For example, do Sears store have to change their line of tools from Craftsman to "Craftsperson?" Or when you cook, do you have to find a new word for manicotti.
