Over the past six years, state officials taken on the task of changing the wording in the state's laws to be more gender-neutral. In the multiyear project, lawmakers have replaced thousands of references to male-centric words in state laws with gender-neutral terms.
For example:
- "Fireman" must now be "firefighter"
- "Security guard" replaces "watchmen"
- "Penmanship" is repalced with "handwriting"
- "Freshman" must now read "First-year student"
